Pumpkin Center and Harvey Town
Pumpkin Center - This little community, almost always pronounced “Punkin Center”, is located just outside of Pacolet Station on the old Jonesville highway and along the railroad. The town and its name go back to events involved in WW II. Read the interesting story at The Birth of Pumpkin Center.
Harvey Town - This neighborhood is of recent origin. It was built about 1950 by the Harvey Family and it was a planned development. I believe even when it was built that it was in the city limits of Pacolet Station. The area where the houses are now was all open farmland. I remember my Dad drilling a well there about 1950 and it was just a large open field with one dirt road going through it. (I learned to drive at that well. I drove one of my Dad’s 2 ton trucks out the dirt road and over the fields. My driving instruction consisted of my Dad showing me the gears, telling me how to start the big truck and the admonition “Don’t hit anything.” He was a great believer in “Learning by Doing”.)
